Rolex Oceans Moment: A Deep Dive into Conservation

Uncovering the oceans’ mysteries to ensure a sustainable future.

For nearly a century, Rolex has been more than just a watchmaker; it has been a supporter and companion to those who dare to explore the extraordinary. And in a world increasingly threatened by environmental degradation, the Swiss watchmaker’s commitment to preserving the planet’s blue heart is evident in its Perpetual Planet Initiative, a far-reaching endeavour that supports a diverse range of conservation projects worldwide.

One of the highlights of this initiative is the Oceans Moment, a dedicated celebration of individuals and organisations working tirelessly to protect our seas. From renowned photographers like Cristina Mittermeier and Paul Nicklen to groundbreaking expeditions like Under The Pole, Rolex has partnered with a global network of experts to raise awareness about the urgent need for ocean conservation.

The Rolex Perpetual Planet Initiative now supports more than 30 partnerships which focus on ocean conservation, wilderness protection and the preservation of the living world. A perfect example of Rolex’s commitment is its collaboration since 2014 with Mission Blue, a non-profit organisation dedicated to protecting ecologically important areas of the ocean. Ben Fitzpatrick, a Mission Blue Hope Spot Champion, exemplifies the dedication and passion required to safeguard these vital ecosystems. Having spent decades fighting to protect the Exmouth Gulf and Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area, Fitzpatrick’s efforts have been instrumental in preserving a critical habitat for marine life. “Most of the time the gulf is quite murky and inaccessible, so people don’t realise that below the surface are some of the most incredible and unique marine ecosystems on the planet. It needs protection. The environment speaks for itself, and all I’m doing is providing a voice,” Fitzpatrick says.

Nestled along the Western Australian coast, the Ningaloo Reef stands as a testament to the natural world’s grandeur. This UNESCO World Heritage site is renowned for its vibrant coral formations of every hue. Exmouth Gulf is a haven of biodiversity, boasting a remarkable array of habitats. Nutrient-rich salt flats, lush seagrass beds, and diverse coral reefs all contribute to the region’s extraordinary ecosystem. From filter-feeding invertebrates to majestic sea turtles, the gulf is home to nearly 2,000 species of fauna, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts and marine biologists alike.

As the world continues to face unprecedented environmental challenges, Rolex’s Oceans Moment serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of protecting our oceans. By supporting innovative projects and inspiring individuals to take action, the watchmaker is playing a vital role in ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
