Rewind to the early 2020s, when everyone was showing off their brand new AirPods or debating about the best wireless earphones on the market. Lily Rose-Depp was obviously unbothered by all the hype and noise: around that time, the actress was spotted on the streets of New York wearing a pair of old-fashioned wired headphones. Since then, paparazzi shots of Depp running errands or getting coffee—all while plugged into her tangled white headphones—have been added to the Pinterest boards of aspiring French girls everywhere.
It only makes sense that Depp now fronts the campaign for Chanel’s Première Sound watch. The name is simplistic; the new Première Sound watch is really a jewellery watch, a sautoir necklace and a pair of wired headphones, all in one.
It’s also a thing of beauty: the long necklace chain is coated in 18k yellow gold, and interwoven with black leather and a black audio cable, resembling the straps of Chanel’s iconic handbags. The watch comes with an octagonal case—a nod to the stopper of the famous Chanel N°5 perfume—and a sleek, black-lacquered dial. Similarly, the earbuds come in black and gold, and feature the Chanel logo on each side.
In terms of functionality, the headphones on the Chanel Première Sound watch will easily connect to your iPhone or Android smartphone using a 3.5mm audio jack. (Adapters connecting the 3.5mm audio jack to Lightning or USB-C are included, too.) The headphones are equipped with a microphone and a remote control that lets you adjust the volume, play or pause your music, answer a phone call, and skip forwards or backwards on a track or video. The Chanel Première Sound offers premium sound, using state-of-the-art audio technology for an immersive listening experience—as Depp demonstrates in the new Chanel campaign.
Depp is filmed in Coco Chanel’s ornately decorated apartment in rue Cambon, Paris, looking like the quintessential French girl. The actress wears a black turtleneck, a denim mini skirt, black tights and knee-high leather boots, all from Chanel. She has a Chanel ribbon tied into a bow on her ponytail. Depp puts on her Chanel Première Sound headphones and when Simple Minds’s Promised You A Miracle plays, she is euphoric—while looking very, very chic.
Depp isn’t the only wired It-girl who is tuned into the appeal of the Chanel Première Sound watch. Back in July, GRAZIA Malaysia spotted Blackpink star Jennie flaunting the accessory at Chanel’s Coco Crush pop-up in Seoul. And this month, Lana Del Rey wore the accessory as a necklace over her little black Chanel dress when she performed at the Rock en Seine music festival in Paris.
You won’t have to wait long to join this coterie of cool, Chanel-clad music lovers: the Première Sound watch launches on 2 September, and will be available across Chanel’s Watches & Fine Jewellery boutiques and Fashion boutiques, as well as on its website, chanel.com.
