On the heels of wearing a Carrie Bradshaw-approved archival Dolce & Gabbana dress from 1999 to the 2024 Gotham Awards, Nicole Kidman is once again taking sartorial cues from the past. But rather than looking back a decade or two, the Australian actress has updated a silhouette from half a century ago for the Los Angeles premiere of her new film, Babygirl.
She arrived at a movie theatre on Sunset Boulevard to promote the upcoming Halina Reijn-directed erotic thriller. Despite the movie’s content exploring themes of power and possession, Kidman opted for a softer ensemble in the form of a custom couture dress from Balenciaga.
Designed by the luxuriate’s creative director Demna, the floor-grazing gown features an elegant strapless white bodice decorated with pink and ivory organza petals. The piece finished in an elongated train and tied with a black satin bow that cinched the 57-year-old’s waist.
Since Kidman joined the house in an official capacity, the mother-of-two has made this elegant column shape her signature for red carpet appearances like the Cinderella-inspired version she wore to Kering’s 2nd Caring For Women dinner or the 2024 Met Gala.
Like the latter, Kidman and Demna modernised an original design from the Maison’s archives. For this occasion, they chose to render a grand coat crafted in 1964 in a contemporary finish, with “24 artisans dedicating 2,850 hours” to the overhaul.
Elsewhere, the film’s male lead, Harris Dickinson, looked a little more edgy in black chinos and an embossed leather jacket. Pop supernova Charli XCX, who will make her screen debut in an upcoming A24 production, also took cues from the British actor in a sensual asymmetrical top from Entire Studios. While we might’ve hoped Kidman would’ve followed suit with a more seductive style, we’re always here for the star to deliver a lesson in fashion history.
