Margot Robbie has become one of Australia’s biggest Hollywood success stories – from humble beginnings on Neighbours to being catapulted into movie star territory thanks to blockbuster performances in films like Wolf Of Wall Street and Barbie, Robbie has graced many a red carpet and, over the years, had a serious fashion evolution, finding her unique style and embracing it.
Having been a mainstay on the awards season circuit for over a decade now, we’ve seen Margot Robbie through many a fashion and beauty era. Take a walk through some of her most memorable red carpet fashion.
The Wolf Of Wall Street Premiere, 2013
Margot Robbie’s breakout role as Naomi Lapaglia in The Wolf Of Wall Street saw her skyrocket to fame across the globe, and also meant plenty of major red carpet appearances for the new star. While you can definitely tell Robbie is more nervous here than she is at a premiere or awards show today, her fashion choices are timeless – this Armani Privé gown is stunning to this day.
Golden Globe Awards, 2014
For her first Golden Globe Awards in 2014, Margot Robbie chose a plunging, bejewelled Gucci dress and emerald green heels. It was the perfect mix of understated without being boring – something Robbie regularly lands with her red carpet fashion.
Academy Awards, 2015
This draped, Golden Age-inspired Saint Laurent gown worked well for Robbie in 2015, when the star was promoting her film Focus in which she starred as a femme fatale alongside Will Smith.
Academy Awards, 2016
Margot Robbie’s Tom Ford gown for the 2016 Oscars red carpet is one of her best-ever fashion looks, and is really indicative of her style evolution through the late 2010s, when she embraced her Hollywood status and started to mix up her aesthetic.
Academy Awards, 2018
2018 was the year Robbie signed with Chanel as an ambassador, so many of her award season gowns were designed by the luxury fashion house. Nominated for Best Actress in I, Tonya, she actually had a wardrobe malfunction on the red carpet and, according to People, requested a sewing kit to repair it herself.
Vanity Fair Oscars Party, 2018
Margot Robbie had an outfit change for the Vanity Fair After Party, opting for a Chanel Spring 2018 Haute Couture gown covered in crystals and Jimmy Choo sandals.
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood UK Premiere, 2019
Through her press tour for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Robbie channelled her character Sharon Tate with plenty of late 60s/early 70s screen siren gowns, like this Oscar de la Renta piece for the UK premiere.
Golden Globe Awards, 2020
This Chanel Fall 2019 Haute Couture set allegedly took 225 hours to make, thanks to that heavily embroidered bodice which also featured 4,750 beads. Her undone hair was intentional – according to hairstylist Bryce Scarlett. “I wanted her hair to have a slept-in textured soft waves look to complement her bold and modern Chanel gown.”
British Academy Film Awards, 2020
Again in Chanel, Robbie’s BAFTAs gown was very demure from the front, with a high neck and simple lace overlay. It was the back that really shone with its lace cape detail.
Birds Of Prey World Premiere, 2020
While Robbie is usually fairly understated on award show red carpets, for her film premieres she tends to embody her characters. That’s definitely true of the Birds Of Prey world premiere in 2020, where Robbie’s stylist Kate Young chose a Dries Van Noten spring/summer 2020 gown and teamed it with hot pink opera gloves.
Academy Awards, 2021
This is one of our favourite Margot Robbie red carpet fashion looks. The floral Chanel dress is even more beautiful when you notice the detail – metallic lace with button detail on the bodice. This was also a debut moment for her bangs, which everyone then promptly asked their hairdresser for.
Paris Fashion Week, 2022
Attending Chanel’s spring haute couture 2022 show in (naturally) pieces from the French fashion house, Margot Robbie proves her style evolution goes beyond just her red carpet appearances. This boxy blazer paired with laid-back hair and patent white ankle boots is the right blend of high fashion and Robbie’s own relaxed aesthetic.
WSJ Magazine 2022 Innovator Awards, 2022
This Proenza Schouler suit lives rent-free in our heads, and will have us forever searching for the perfect flared 70s fit. Everything works – the lace tunic top, the heavy cat-eye flick, all of it.
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Governors Awards, 2022
Margot Robbie’s Bottega Veneta cut-out dress for the Governors Awards was a favourite of ours then, and remains one now. This olive green hue was practically made for Robbie, and the subtle gold accessories courtesy of Sidney Garber added a Grecian goddess feel.
Babylon Global Screening, 2022
Again, Margot Robbie chose drama for the global screening of Babylon in this incredible Alaïa Spring/Summer 2023 collection dress. Essentially one long piece of knitted cashmere fabric that weaves around her hips, bust and head before trailing off with a feathered train, it’s bold and scene-stealing, just like her character of Nellie LaRoy.
Babylon UK Premiere, 2023
Margot Robbie continued to channel the frenetic energy of Nellie LaRoy for Babylon‘s UK premiere in 2023, opting for this striking Valentino dress, which hung low in the back and needed no additional accessories to make its statement (except for a matching red lip, of course).
Babylon Australian Premiere, 2023
Robbie’s blue Versace dress for the Australian premiere of Babylon generated plenty of discussion as fashion aficionados recognised its homage to the fashion house’s 1995 iteration, worn by Carla Bruni on the runway. The red detail was also an homage to Nellie LaRoy’s red gown in the film. Later, the Australian actress chose Australian designer Michael Lo Sordo for the after-party.
Met Gala, 2023
After a seven-year hiatus, Robbie returned to the famed Met steps to attend the 2023 Met Gala, which was themed “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line Of Beauty”. Given the dress code was “In Honour Of Karl”, and Robbie was the last “Choupette”, or Chanel ambassador, appointed by the late designer before his passing in 2019, Robbie cemented her sartorial growth within the maison by opting for a black silk chiffon dress from the Chanel Haute Couture archives. Specifically, an evening gown originally worn by supermodel Cindy Crawford during the Spring 1993 Haute Couture collection presentation.
Barbie Los Angeles Premiere, 2023
It wouldn’t be difficult for us to include every image from Robbie’s months-long Barbie press tour, however given the ensembles are all interpretations of the doll’s most iconic silhouettes, we’ll limit our edit to a concise few. Our frontrunner? Robbie’s custom Schiaparelli creation was inspired by Mattel’s 1960 “Solo In The Spotlight” Barbie. Every element, from the strapless sequin bodice, pink chiffon scarf, four-strand crystal choker necklace and black open-toed heels, was rendered by Daniel Roseberry in couture-level excellence.
Barbie European Premiere, 2023
For Barbie‘s European premiere, Robbie flocked to the pink carpet in central London for the final stop of the globe-trotting press tour. To do so, Robbie enlisted the atelier of Vivienne Westwood—helmed by the late designer’s husband, Andreas Kronthaler—to recreate the ‘Enchanted Evening’ Barbie from 1960. Though the original didn’t feature Westwood’s signature orb motif incrusted with crystals, these ‘isms’ are what make the look so memorable.
Saltburn Premiere, 2023
Margot Robbie made her return to the red carpet following the dissolution of the SAG-AFTRA strike in her most self-assured look yet. Once again looking to Schiappareli, Robbie demonstrated her status as a fashion fixture in a wide-leg trouser and trompe l’oeil corset ensemble from the Maison’s Fall 2023 Couture collection.
Critics Choice Awards, 2024
With the Barbie press tour well and truly behind her, Robbie kicked off the 2024 awards season in this divine custom Balmain gown adorned with leather rosettes and a wet-look effect at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards.
Vanity Fair Oscars Party, 2024
Though she kept things somewhat minimal for her Oscars red carpet look in a regal black Versace gown—with her Oscar-nominated co-star America Ferrera taking on the Barbie pink dress code—Robbie turned up the drama for her after-party look in a vintage Mugler from the Spring/Summer 1996 collection. Having developed a taste for archival fashion throughout her Barbie press tour, the actress and her stylist, Andrew Mukamal, seem keen to keep the vintage experimentation up in 2024.
