It’s not often that the must-have item of the season is a style once relegated to an afterthought. But with the popularity of Miu Miu’s satin ballerinas, Alaïa’s mesh flats and the Adidas sambas, footwear is having its moment in the spotlight. Of course, staying one step ahead of the trend cycle is a perennial task, which is why we typically wait until a piece has garnered momentum and endorsements from the celebrity style set before firing our purchase off.
Over the weekend, Jennifer Lawrence used her latest outing to co-sign the next ‘It’ item as the race-inspired Puma Speedcat. The actress, who is currently pregnant with her second child, can always be relied on to adopt viral styles and render them in a timeless way, whether it be the ‘pop of red’ trend she continues to embrace through her favourite The Row sweater or the jelly sandal which she’s been a long-time proponent of. So, to see Lawrence swap out her trusty sneakers for the slimline trainer should be the definitive proof that now’s the time to invest in the shoe.
Over the weekend, Lawrence wore the black iteration to attend the World Series baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees. With the Speedcat having roots in the Grand Prix, it’s fitting that the 34-year-old makes her debut in them for a sporting event.
While the footwear is certainly a departure from her usual slip-ons, Lawrence kept the remainder of her ensemble rather uniform in a pair of wide-leg black trousers, an oversized button-down and a sculptural pendant necklace. Yes, the Speedcat might already be in high rotation of the wardrobes of Emily Ratajkowski and Dua Lipa, but Lawrence’s muted take is evidence that the suede sneaker is actually more versatile than it seems.
Puma knows this too, which is why they’ve also recently unveiled two more colourways; an on-trend brown and sky blue. We’d pair the former with a matching latte-coloured jacket, black mini skirt and calf-length socks and the latter with light wash denim and a white ribbed tank top. But irrespective of your own tastes, the style is putting you in the driver’s seat. Shop the Puma Speedcat, below.
