The press tour for Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has filled a sartorial hole in our post-Barbie world. With their tasteful method dressing, the cast, including newcomers Jenna Ortega and Monica Bellucci, and OGs Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara, have been putting on a haunting display. With the highly-anticipated sequel debuting at the Venice International Film Festival this week, Ortega and Ryder shared a special red carpet-moment where the two seemed to borrow from each other’s archives.
Stunning in Dior, Ortega’s ongoing homages to Ryder’s legendary character (and her on-screen mother) Lydia Deetz crescendoed yesterday with a reimagining of one of Deetz’s most recognisable outfits. The look, which was a nod to the red tulle wedding gown Ryder donned in the original 1988 film, comprised a vivid red tulle gown by Dior Haute Couture with a heart-shaped, ruffled bodice that boasted ample skin. Styled by, she accessorised with the Bois de Rose necklace, bracelet and rings in white gold, pink gold and diamonds by Dior Joaillerie.
Ryder, on the other hand, cut a timelessly chic figure in Chanel Haute Couture. Wearing a button-up shirt, waistcoat, blazer, and oversized bowtie, the actress looked like a character from Ortega’s Wednesday series.
When they stood together, the duo coordinated with their floor-skimming tulle skirts in red and black.
Ortega even extended the homage to her makeup with a modern take on Lydia’s lived-in gothic glamour. Instead of sharp, pointed bangs, the actress opted for softer face-framing layers and a relaxed chignon. For makeup, she opted for a monochromatic red look that riffed off her character’s smudged smokey eye.
The iconic outfit is not only a piece of fashion history, but it’s also a go-to for Halloween costumes. In fact, both Bella Hadid and Kourtney Kardashian have tried their hand at Ryder’s original look.
