After headlines broke that Hedi Slimane would be leaving Celine after serving six years as creative director, many weren’t holding their breath for news of a successor. But just as quickly as Slimane was out, a new face was in: Michael Rider.

“The maison Celine is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Rider as artistic director,” read an official statement. “Michael Rider will have the entire creative responsibility of all Celine collections, from womenswear, menswear, leather goods, and accessories to couture.”

“Celine is a maison with values very close to my heart and beautiful heritage to build on,” shared Rider about his appointment, which will take effect in 2025. “I am honoured to come back and shape the future of the maison together with the Celine team.”

Having begun his fashion career at Balenciaga under Nicolas Ghesquière, Rider then spent ten instrumental years with Celine during Phoebe Philo‘s time as design director. Most recently, he was the creative director of Polo Ralph Lauren.

“I am delighted to welcome Michael back to Celine, a maison he knows intimately,” said Severine Merle, CEO of Celine. “Michael’s vision, creative talent, together with his genuine nature and strong connection to Celine’s heritage, make him a natural choice to continue to build a long-lasting success for the Maison”.

Though no reason was offered for Slimane’s departure, the rumour mill is in overdrive, with many speculating a jump to Chanel following Virginie Viard’s exit.

A statement honouring Slimane’s profound impact on the brand was shared to celebrate his time at the French luxury house.

“The holistic vision of Hedi Slimane, his exigence and rigour have made it possible to redefine the codes of Celine whilst reaffirming its feminine and Parisian roots,” read a press release from Celine. “He has also remarkably enriched new territories for the Maison, such as the men’s silhouette, couture and haute parfumerie.

“The extraordinary journey they have taken together over the last seven years has made Celine a house with a formidable foundation for the future.”
