This is not your grandmother’s antique cutlery!

Dust off your old dish drawers and shine your silverware. At least that’s what Cate Blanchett’s latest look suggested after the Australian actress attended the premiere of her upcoming film Borderlands wearing a demi-couture halter neck made from 102 silver spoons.

The 2024 video game-to-film adaptation sees Blanchett star as Lilith, a notorious outlaw who teams up with a bunch of ragtag misfits on an intergalactic mission to save a young girl. Irrespective of her film’s subject matter,  Blanchett has always been one to polish up on the red carpet. But more importantly, she’s been a stringent advocator for repurposing old ensembles into new silhouettes. (Elizabeth Stewart, the stylist of the ever-stylish environmentalist, once wrote on Instagram in 2020 that it’s “chic to repeat”.)

Now, on the eroded desert-esque red carpet in Los Angeles, Blanchett has offered her boldest rewear yet. Designed by the Stockholm-based label Hodakova, Blanchett’s sculptural top consisted of antique cutlery that had been moulded and reshaped into an armour-like breastplate. She finished her outfit with sharp cigarette-cut trousers, razor-sharp stilettos and Louis Vuitton jewellery.

Each of the utensils was reportedly sourced from all across Sweden. Since launching its ready-to-wear offering in 2021, Hodakova has garnered a legion of acolytes for its imaginary use of upcycling deadstock materials to make something truly one of a kind. Unsurprisingly, the mindful ethos of reclaiming discarded matter has resonated with the sci-fi set.

Hodokova is certainly finding her niche in this genre, with Emma Corrin recently wearing a leather mini-dress made from vintage belts to a screening of Deadpool & Wolverine at Comic-Con. The making of the dress would also earn the stamp of approval from The Matrix’s cutlery-bending young boy.

Borderlands launches in theatres on August 8. Watch the trailer for the film, starring the ensemble cast of Jamie-Lee Curtis, Ariana Greenblatt, Jack Black and Kevin Hart, below.
