British designer Louise Trotter has been named the new creative director of Bottega Veneta, succeeding Matthieu Blazy, who is departing for the role of artistic director at Chanel. The announcement, quickly announced after news of Blazy’s departure broke, marks a pivotal moment for the storied Italian house and its parent company, Kering.
Though relatively under the radar, Trotter has become known for her understated innovation—a vision we’re intrigued to see take shape at Bottega Veneta. Her most recent tenure was at Carven, where she is credited with breathing new life into the fledgling Maison. Under her leadership, Trotter transformed Carven into a contemporary powerhouse, placing it firmly back on our radars with a fusion of minimalism and opulence.
Though Blazy’s indelible mark on the House will be missed, Trotter’s new chapter ushers in an exciting new era, particularly considering her innate sense for modern womenswear.
“Bottega Veneta represents the pinnacle of quiet luxury and craftsmanship,” Trotter wrote in a statement. “I’m honoured to continue its legacy while introducing a new chapter of innovation and relevance.”
“I am pleased to welcome Louise as our new Creative Director,” wrote Leo Rongone, CEO of Bottega Veneta, about the appointment. “Her aesthetic seamlessly combines exquisite design with sublime craft, and her commitment to cultural advocacy aligns beautifully with our brand vision.
“Through her sophisticated lens, Bottega Veneta will continue to celebrate its heritage while preserving modern relevance. I also want to express my profound appreciation for Matthieu, who has been an extraordinary partner in infusing our brand with desirability, emotional resonance, and intellectual identity.”
Her appointment is particularly significant as it makes her the sole female creative director within Kering’s expansive portfolio of fashion brands, which includes Gucci, Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen and Saint Laurent. This milestone underscores a growing shift in the industry, where fans and consumers have been advocating for companies to pay more attention to female design leads.
Trotter’s vision for Bottega Veneta is eagerly awaited, with her creative reign at Bottega Veneta officially kicking in at the end of January 2025.
