For someone who bookmarks her life by the eras she’s lived, Taylor Swift is penning a storied history through her fashion choices.
There were her early years when she introduced herself as the ultimate girl next door in white bohemian dresses, cowboy boots and curls the size of Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountains. Or, her first style evolution when she allowed the textures and grittiness of New York to melt away her sweet persona into something more sleek upon the recording and release of 1989 in 2014.
Even her most recent offerings, 2022’s Midnights and 2024’s The Tortured Poets Department, are steeped in sartorial lore, with each album chronicled by specific clothing choices set to represent the themes and overall aesthetic of the body of work. This is something she’s applied to all her recordings, from the plaid renaissance she’s currently harkening to her Reputation days to her high rotation of maroon, crimson and scarlet pieces while working on 2012’s Red.
Unlike her contemporaries, Swift’s discography is innately linked to her wardrobe, with everything from her red carpet moments, our favourite being her green sequin column dress from the 2024 Golden Globes, to her street style outings and even recording studio looks eligible to be decoded for clues.
As her romance with Kansas City Chiefs tight end, Travis Kelce, continues to bloom, Swift has even adopted a new look in the form of her game-day attire. Cementing herself as a bona fide ‘WAG’, Swift is carving out another space in the stadium.
This is something we’ll see her maintain as her billion-dollar-grossing Eras Tour draws to a close. Swapping the stage for the stands, custom multi-colour Roberto Cavalli sequin two-pieces for Vivienne Westwood corsets and red lips for face glitter, Swift will always pique our interest through what she wears.
As the singer also gears up for 35th birthday, there’s never been a better time to reflect on all the looks we’ve loved before. From 2007 to now, Swift’s fashion evolution is one that never goes out of style.
