Challengers star Zendaya has sauntered her way into the 2024 Met Gala in New York City in a custom emerald and sapphire gown by John Galliano for Maison Margiela. Reportedly inspired by a peacock, layers of lamé and organza have been deftly draped and adorned with bunches of blue and green grapes.
According to the fashion house, the 27-year-old’s hat and veil (which perched atop a teased-out low bun) is hand painted, and was created by Stephen Jones for the Maison. While Zendaya’s long-time ‘image architect’ Law Roach told reporters on Thursday that his star client’s dress wouldn’t be fitted until two days prior to the Gala, he certainly got it together, completing the look with a pair of custom-made Tabi pumps from Louboutin for Maison Margiela, Bulgari jewels, a dark lip and a single hummingbird on his muse’s left shoulder.
The 27-year-old is indeed a co-chair at this year’s Gala, joining Jennifer Lopez, Chris Hemsworth and Bad Bunny. Heralding the opening of the Met’s Spring exhibition in New York City, this year’s theme is “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.”
But just when we thought we could move onto covering another celebrity look, Zendaya walked the carpet a second time, this time in a never-before-worn John Galliano for Givenchy black gown, plucked from the spring 1996 collection. Take a look.
Zendaya recently finished up the publicity circuit for her new romantic drama Challengers, a Luca Guadagnino masterpiece about a young tennis player turned coach who transforms her husband—a mediocre player—into a grand slam champion. Roach and Zendaya delivered fashion moment after fashion moment during the film’s global press tour.
“[Premieres and press conferences] can be daunting and scary, so for me, clothes are a way to create a little shield,” Zendaya recently said of her signature ‘method dressing’ approach to red carpet style. “I create a character so you’re not really yourself out there, you’re someone else.”
Challengers is in cinemas now.
