At the 2023 LACMA Art + Film Gala, Sabato de Sarno’s Vision for Gucci Becomes Realised Under Iconic Street Lights
In the City of Angels, stars light up the boulevard in deep burgundy and chintzy sequins.
If you hadn’t realised, Sabato De Sarno’s vision for Gucci as creative director is inextricably entwined with Los Angeles. Fresh from filming a campaign for the Italian luxuriate with Miley Cyrus underneath the Hollywood sign, the designer shifted his focus downtown to Gucci’s annual Art + Film Gala with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, or LACMA.
Under LACMA’s infamous street lights, De Sarno painted Wilshire Boulevard in his ‘Ancora’ hue of deep burgundy and chintzy sequins. Hallmarks of his debut collection for the house, including merlot mini-shorts and slick, tinsel threads, adorned the legions of A-listers and Gucci gang members who attended the soirée.
Supermodels including Mariacarla Boscono and Vittoria Ceretti—whom we wonder if she attended as a personal guest of the night’s co-host Leonardo DiCaprio—debuted De Sarno’s first dedicated eveningwear collection, “Ancora Notte”. Translating to “Night Again”, the glimpses at the new range mark a return to unfussy glamour and an ode to sensual alley cats and nightcrawlers who appear after dark.
Elsewhere, A$AP Rocky, Elliot Page and Pedro Pascal debuted the first official formal menswear range for the house. (Sadly, no Paul Mescal nor his delicious exposed thighs).
Following the star-studded step-and-repeat, guests were ushered inside for a meal prepared by none other than the head chef at Gucci’s very own restaurant, Gucci Osteria da Massimo Bottura in Beverly Hills.
While Lenny Kravitz serenaded the stars with a special performance, the revelry ended with a makeshift runway installation as the guests mingled in LACMA’s courtyard to unveil the new pieces. Our favourite? Gucci’s new sustainable collection of vegan Horsebit handbags modelled by campaign star Billie Eilish.
Indeed, an event dedicated to Hollywood’s cultural contributions isn’t without a bit of theatre.
Ahead, the best fashion moments from the evening.
