It’s Mooncake Season: Our Picks of the Best Pastries to Shop For this Mid-Autumn Festival

It's laden with the goods.

A reunion dinner under the full moon is what we look forward to every Mid-Autumn Festival, but handing each other mooncakes has characterised the celebration. Traditionally known for its golden thin crust laden with sweet fillings like lotus paste, the palm-sized pastry symbolises togetherness. Hence, gifting mooncakes has been an age-old practice to send wishes to their loved ones. Keep reading to see our top picks of the best mooncakes in KL 2024.

Over the years, mooncakes too, evolved. The baked crust is now commonly replaced by the snow skin—a sweet mochi dough served cold, or even a refreshing take like jelly or ice cream. The fillings also come in a myriad of flavours, from classics like red bean paste to experimental ones like Nasi Lemak-inspired Ember Jade with XO Sauce filling from Hilton Kuala Lumpur. That aside, brands from fashion powerhouses like Ralph Lauren to renowned hotel kitchens outdo themselves every year in designing packaging that will stand out in a vast array of options. They take mooncakes and celebrations as seriously as we all do.

Picking and buying mooncakes can be a tedious mission considering the amount of research that goes into the process—we’ve got you covered. Bookmark this page too as we continue to update the story with more mooncakes as they become available soon.

Hilton Kuala Lumpur

Hilton Kuala Lumpur tapped emerging local multidisciplinary artist Jaemy C. for a collection that celebrates the artistry of the culture. Featuring two visually stunning boxes, the collection is meant for keepsakes. Taking after the shape of a traditional paper lantern, the cylindrical box is painted with deconstructed strokes that make up the Chinese characters of Mid Autumn. The artist also reveals that every stroke was handwritten with Chinese ink before being digitised. A subtler option would be the red quilted box that encased four mooncakes, which is presented along with mixed media calligraphy and magnet art pieces that are inspired by the mythical dragon.

The box, however, is not the only highlight of the prestigious Hilton. Aside from all-time favourite flavours like lotus paste or red bean paste enveloped in the baked crust, the snow skin options are served with adventurous pairings like Nasi Lemak-inspired Ember Jade with XO sauce filing or Amaretto Lotus Paste with Blueberry Cheese Feuillantine. As for those who prefer to enjoy their sweet delight over a fragrant Pu-Er tea, the signature Blooming Peony—lotus paste, pumpkin lava, and custard with pumpkin seeds—is a perfect choice.

Dipped in a luxurious gold backdrop, the Moonlit Majesty is adorned with Tee’s artwork of the Dragon motif set against the moonlit sky. Like the design of the box, the mooncake flavour for this series is a harmonious fusion of traditional flavours like Pandan Lotus Paste with Single Yolk and a novel combination like Nyonya Red Bean Paste with salted Mung Bean filing. As for the Joyous Blossom, Tee decorated the flower-shaped box with butterflies flitting in the flower field.
