The fall film festivals are off to a great start, with Venice getting the ball rolling with a number of high-profile films including Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. But those who aren’t able to witness it on the Lido shouldn’t be too disheartened: the much-awaited sequel is coming to our shores very soon. That is not to mention other noteworthy titles such as Azazel Jacobs’ His Three Daughters and Ryan Murphy’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Premieres 5th September in Cinemas

The spooky season is upon us and there is no other way to welcome it than by tuning in to Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Picking up where the original left off 35 years ago, the sequel opens with three generations of the Deetz family returning home to Winter River following a family tragedy. The film kicks into gear when Lydia’s daughter, Astrid, accidentally opens the portal to the Afterlife.

The Perfect Couple

Premieres 5th September on Netflix

Nicole Kidman serving c*nt in another camp classic? Sign us up. Playing a novelist whose son is marrying someone she disapproves of, Kidman is determined to keep up appearances, planning the kind of wedding only a mother could put together. But everything comes to a halt when a body turns up on the beach and the investigation finds the case to unfold like one of her novels.

Call Me Bae

Premieres 6th September on Prime Video

If you enjoyed Crazy Rich Asians and 2 Broke Girls, chances are you would love Call Me Bae. Bella ‘Bae’ Chowdhary, played by Ananya Panday, used to have everything handed to her on a silver platter. But a reversal of fortune forces the wide-eyed heiress to claw her way back to the top, weaponising her impeccable style and wit, conning her way into a top newsroom in Mumbai.

Speak No Evil

Premieres 12th September in Cinemas

One of the most disturbing psychological horrors this decade, Gæsterne, is getting the Hollywood treatment. Starring James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis, the remake retains the original premise where an American family’s getaway to an idyllic country estate, owned by a British family they befriended on vacation, turns into a nightmare they can’t seem to wake up from.

Agatha All Along

Premieres 19th September on Disney+ Hotstar

Kathryn Hahn is ready for the spotlight. After turning in a scene-stealing performance in WandaVision, the actress is set to reprise her role as Agatha Harkness in the upcoming Agatha All Along. The infamous witch, now powerless because of Wanda Maximoff, sets off for the mythical Witches’ Road, along with a goth teen and a desperate coven of witches, to reclaim her power.

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story

Premieres 19th September on Netflix

Ryan Murphy seems to have found his niche in spotlighting psychopathic men the Internet will drool over—we all remember Evan Peters’ ripped and sweaty Jeffrey Dahmer. This time around, the television heavyweight opens the file case of real-life brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez who were convicted for the murders of their parents back in 1996 and narrates it in an episodic true crime drama.

The Penguin

Premieres 20th September on HBO and HBO Go

Matt Reeves’ The Batman brought forth some of the most original character interpretations in the superhero genre, from the brooding Robert Pattinson to the unrecognisable Colin Farrell. The latter, in particular, has been lauded for his portrayal of Oswald Cobblepot, a.k.a. the Penguin and is now enjoying his moment in the sun as he reprises his role for an eight-episode series.

His Three Daughters

In Azazel Jacobs’ latest domestic drama, three sisters of different dispositions find themselves at odds with each other when they return home to spend time with their dying father. His Three Daughters tenderly reframes the narrative on grief and how it affects family dynamics, told from the perspectives of the strait-laced Katie, free-spirited Christina, and sports-betting stoner Rachel.

La Maison

Premieres 20th September on Apple TV+

A tale of power struggle at a family-owned French atelier? La Maison is pretty much Succession for the fashion girlies. This 10-episode French-language drama brings Parisian haute couture intrigue to the screen, following the famed fashion brand Ledu, whose good reputation is being dragged through the mud after a video concerning its star designer Vincent Ledu goes viral.

Bagman

Premieres 20th September in Cinemas

Looking for some cheap thrills to jolt your spirit after a long day at work? Look no further than Colm McCarthy’s Bagman. The atmospheric horror, which stars Sam Claflin of The Hunger Games and Daisy Jones & The Six fame, tells the story of a father who is still haunted by the monster from his childhood. The problem escalates when the murderous creature starts going after his family.
