The 2024 Paris Olympics have come to an end. To see The City Of Lights out, and to pass the baton to The City Of Angels who will host the 2028 Olympic games, Billie Eilish performed at the closing ceremony. Well, she performed from a quintessentially Californian lifeguard post in Venice Beach.
The 22-year-old singer, who famously surprised fans by flying economy, took to the light blue stage in a Ralph Lauren Team USA jersey and cap to perform her hit single “Birds Of A Feather”, a song aptly about people being united under the same interests. She was accompanied by her brother Finneas. You can watch the uplifting performance here.
Born in Los Angeles, Eilish was just one of many big American stars to help with the Paris to LA handover. Snoop Dogg and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers performed, and H.E.R. sang the American national anthem. Tom Cruise also leapt off the roof of the stadium in Paris, Mission: Impossible-style.
“The LA28 Handover promises to showcase the heartbeat of LA—which like the Olympics—is where people come from all over the world to pursue their dreams,” Executive producer and creator of the event, Ben Winston, said in a statement.
“We hope to showcase a collection of Los Angeles stories—featuring the city’s people, creativity, music and of course sport, all wrapped up with a little Hollywood magic—to invite the world into the LA28 Games.”
In an interview from four years ago, Eilish opened up about her love for her city.
“As much as people think LA is unfriendly, I think it’s pretty friendly. It’s there to help you,” she said at the time. “LA kind of has everything. You don’t even realise it. There’s like a couple little spots that I like to go to be alone. I love driving. That’s all I do. Now, it really feels like my home. Every time I come back, I feel back to myself and back to who I am and my roots. LA is inspiring in a lot of ways.”
See you in 2028.
