Just like the viral “Are you happy to be in Paris?” sound taking over TikTok, Emily Cooper is back in the French capital, taking over the Champs-Élysées with her polarising ‘American does Parisienne’ fashion choices.
After the series’ lead Lily Collins was spotted filming with France’s first lady Brigitte Macron back in April, production for the upcoming fourth season of Emily In Paris has ramped up with a trailer for the first part of the instalment released on July 23.
Staying true to the “ringard” spirit of the series—a French phrase that translates to ‘tacky’ or ‘basic’, but has since been reclaimed to advocate for the titular character’s peak-millennial maximalist aesthetic—the trailer teases a love triangle as complex as Emily Cooper’s wardrobe.
Emily In Paris Season 4: Part 1 trailer
Oui! In surprising news, Emily In Paris‘ fourth season will be released as a double feature, with the first part of this chapter in Emily’s life teased in a trailer promising to ‘chic things up’. Though the timing of the trailer release coincides with the upcoming Paris Olympic Games, it’s apparent the only challenge in Emily’s life at the moment is untangling her messy love life.
In conversation with heiress-turned-cabaret-star Mindy (Ashley Park), we see Emily try to embrace the single life while re-evaluating her prospects with Gabriel (Lucas Nicolas Bravo) and Alfie (Lucien Laviscount). Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu,) the manager of luxury French marketing company Savoir, also returns with her sage (albeit snappy) words of advice: “You broadcast your entire life for public consumption. Now it’s ruining my business”.
Yet, the most compelling drama doesn’t appear to be the love triangle between Emily, Gabriel and Alfie. But rather, Emily, Gabriel, Camille (who is pregnant, as you may recall) and her Greek artist girlfriend, Sofia. Sacré bleu, indeed. Watch the trailer for yourself below.
Storyline aside, it’s clear Emily’s marketing executive wardrobe is slightly elevating this season. Still, the whimsically deluded silhouettes are providing the exact form of sartorial escapism we need right now. If you want specimens of chic French style, the show is exploding with examples of that, too. Just look at Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu’s ‘Sylvie’ or Camille Razat’s ‘Camille’ for proof.
Speaking on her approach to Emily’s evolving style, costume designer Marilyn Fittousi said, “Her outfits may hurt your eyes, they may not appeal, but they leave no one indifferent. That bet paid off last season, and she got everyone’s attention.”
“Emily being too chic or too French would have meant that she’d given in and that her personality was no longer as strong,” she added before concluding, “So she may have accepted a certain type of Parisian code, but we’re sticking to her eclectic, colourful style with prints that I will continue to defend.”
While we’re far off from seeing Emily in a Saint Laurent sheer pencil skirt and pussybow blouse from the luxuriates FW24 collection or even a pair of Celine micro shorts, we at least have evidence that beneath the gaudy phone cases and eclectic layering, Emily’s looks are eye-catching, irrespective of how you judge them.
