Emily Blunt Reveals Her Daughters Aren’t A Fan Of Her ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ Character

Not all icons are understood.

While many of us eagerly await the upcoming sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, two stakeholders might not be so keen on the revival: Emily Blunt’s daughters.

According to the actress, when she showed the iconic 2006 film to her two children, 10-year-old Hazel and seven-year-old Violet, they were not big fans of her infamous character, Emily Charlton.

“They thought I was the meanest person they’ve ever met,” she told Page Six at the 18th Annual American Institute for Stuttering gala.

In the two decades since Blunt portrayed the frosty senior assistant to Miranda Runway magazine’s editor, Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), her character has been immortalised in pop culture as somewhat of an icon, despite her inhospitable behaviour towards the unstylish newcomer Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway).

“It’s incredible that [The Devil Wears Prada] has such an indelible fingerprint on people, and it’s people’s standby feel-good movie,” she continued. “It’s quoted to me every week.”

But as the film goes on and Sachs steps up—even usurping Charlton in Paris—we see her soften with vulnerability when she realises that the job and industry she dedicates every inch of her being to does not actually love her back.

As revealed earlier this year by Variety, Disney is developing a sequel to the beloved film. The original screenwriter, Aline Brosh McKenna, and director David Frankel are in talks to tell the next chapter.

Meryl Steep is tipped to reprise her role as Miranda Priestly, Runway magazine’s fierce editor, to dish out her signature penetrating glares and soul-crushing pursed lips. Anne Hathaway, who played the film’s lead, Andy Sachs, is also rumoured to be excited to return. Blunt, who played Sachs’ adversary-turned-equal Emily Charlton, and Stanley Tucci, who portrayed Sachs’ sole ally, Nigel Kipling, are (sadly) yet to comment on their participation, but there is hope—should her daughters not veto the project, that is…
