It’s only May and already Dua Lipa has debuted a new relationship on the red carpet — at none other than Cannes Film Festival, been confirmed as starring in her first feature film — none other than Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s Barbie, and now, revealed new music is on the way.
On Instagram, the 27-year-old singer revealed fans could expect a new single coming this Friday, one that’s been created specifically for the Barbie movie’s album. “This Barbie has a song coming this week… FRIDAY MIDNIGHT BST,” Lipa wrote.
In the accompanying video, she steps out of her pink fluffy heels — mimicking the film trailer’s instantly iconic shot of Robbie’s arched foot doing the same— before blowing a kiss at the camera. The shot is cropped from the waist up, but she’s wearing purple eyeshadow, a pink halterneck dress and a lot of jewellery.
A disco beat is heard in the background with just one lyric by Lipa teased: “Just come along for the ride!”
The clip then confirms the song’s name — ‘Dance the Night’ — and its release at midnight BST Friday.
Lipa’s post was, naturally, met with much excitement, including from the likes of Donatella Versace, confirming Lipa is wearing Versace in the clip: “She’s a Versace Barbie 😉🦋” and Barbie’s official IG account, which commented, “can’t wait 😍😍😍”. Mark Ronson also left a series of alternating pink heart and fire emojis in the comments, possibly hinting at his involvement behind the boards on the track.
In the upcoming live-action Barbie film, Lipa will star as a mermaid Barbie alongside Robbie and Gosling, as well as Simu Liu, Issa Rae and a plethora of other famous faces as Barbies and Kens.
So far most details about the upcoming film have been kept under wraps, however, in a previous interview, Robbie said it won’t be what we expect. “All we can say is whatever you’re thinking, it’s not that,” said told th The Hollywood Reporter. “Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is.’ But our goal is to be like, whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different — the thing you didn’t know you wanted.”
The most highly anticipated movie of the year, directed by Greta Gerwig, will premiere in the US on July 21.
