Director Wes Anderson is known for his unique narrative approach, idiosyncratic visual style and knack for tapping a show-stopping ensemble cast — and he pulled some of Hollywood’s biggest names for his latest cinematic endeavor.
His new film, Asteroid City, follows a series of world-changing events that dramatically disrupt the itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention in an American desert town in the 1950s. It boasts an A-list cast including acclaimed actors like Tom Hanks and Adrien Brody, to Tinseltown’s favorite blonde bombshells Scarlett Johansson and Margot Robbie, plus up-and-comers like Maya Hawke. On Tuesday, they all celebrated the premiere at Alice Tully Hall in New York City and Anderson‘s signature brand of whimsicality was on full display with their fashions.
Stars stepped on the desert-themed step-and-repeat paying sartorial homage to the filmmaker’s eccentricities. Robbie’s surrealist Schiaparelli dress featured a keyhole bellybutton detailing, while Johansson’s retro-coded Carolina Herrera gown was embellished with a playful rosette and Hawke’s custom black sequined Prada dress came together with a matching bedazzled swimming cap, inspired by the mid-century time period.

The men embraced monochromatic pastels, with the inimitably stylish Jeff Goldblum doing his thing in shades of slate blue, salmon and yellow. Rupert Friend and Bryan Cranston embraced earth-tones evocative of the desert landscape. Tony Revolori popped in lavender, Stephen Park painted the town teal and Jeffrey Wright stood out in marine blue.
Embracing their auteur’s quintessential aesthetic, it’s safe to say these stars understood the assignment.
Asteroid City hits theaters on June 23.
