No need to adjust your set—television’s night of nights, the Emmy Awards, will return to the small screen on September 15, 2024, with the 76th annual ceremony celebrating the best and brightest releases aired over the past year.

As you may recall, the historic SAG-AFTRA writers and actors strike prompted the 75th event to be broadcast at a delayed time slot in early January—the thick of awards season. Now, with the nominees for the 2024 Emmy Awards released today on July 18, many of our favourite critically acclaimed and comfort watch programmes are in the running to take home consecutive winged women statues. (Or at least to their respective studio lots on Hollywood Boulevard).

Leading the charge is the Asian-American historical drama Shōgun with over 25 nominations across key categories including Outstanding Drama Series. Set in feudal Japan, the FX epic has become the first-ever Japanese-language release to be nominated in the prestigious division.

Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri will also reunite in Downtown Los Angeles with The Bear narrowly coming in second for most nominations with 23 nods going to the sapid, albeit anxiety-inducing, culinary drama.

Baby Reindeer, Richard Gadd’s turbulent roman-à-clef, joins Netflix’s stylish noir adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley as contenders for the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, while Ryan Gosling earned his first-ever Emmy nomination for Guest Actor In a Comedy Series after his ludicrous character breaks during his third time hosting Saturday Night Live.

It’s also a season of many firsts, with Selena Gomez earning her first nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, Naomi Watts selected for the Best Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series for her role as Babe Paley in Ryan Murphy’s dishy New York high society drama Feud: Capote vs. The Swans and Baby Reindeer’s Nava Mau becoming the first trans actress to be recognised in the Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series category.

“Cut” will also be called for some shows, with the beloved royal drama The Crown, Brie Larson’s Lessons In Chemistry and the Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough led crime drama Under The Bridge taking their final curtain call.

Ahead of the cast assemblies at the Peacock Theatre and the procession of spotlight-worthy sartorial moments taking to the red carpet, reacquaint yourself with the leading television shows nominated for a 2024 Emmy Award below.
