It’s hard to think that it’s already been twelve months since Hollywood gathered at the Beverly Hilton Hotel for the annual Golden Globes. But between countless other award ceremonies, glitzy international film festivals and endless hours spent in the theatre watching the latest feats from the industry, the stars are once again preparing to return to the red carpet for the 82nd Golden Globe Awards in early 2025.
On the morning of December 9, Mindy Kaling, wearing a sculpted butter yellow gown by Australian designer Rachel Gilbert, and Morris Chestnut unveiled the cohort of actors and releases receiving nominations for their performances and artistic endeavours.
Leading the charge with the most accolades was Jacques Audiard’s operatic and ambitious musical crime drama, Emilia Pérez. The Spanish-speaking epic, which earned ten nominations, follows a Mexican cartel leader, portrayed by Karla Sofía Gascón, who desires to undergo gender-affirming surgery to live authentically as a woman.
Gascón, who received a Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy nomination, made history as the first transgender woman to be recognised in the category. Her costars, Zoë Saldaña and Selena Gomez, also received nominations for the Best Supporting Actress, for their stirring portrayals.
Brady Corbet’s historical drama The Brutalist followed suit with seven nominations. The film follows Holocaust survivor, Hungarian-Jewish architect László Tóth portrayed by Adrian Brody, as he begins a new life in the United States after a wealthy client gives him the chance to live the American dream.
Young Hollywood was also in good stead as Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Zendaya (Challengers), Margaret Qualley (The Substance), Mikey Madison (Anora) and Gabriel LaBelle (Saturday Night) all secured nominations in principal categories. The likes of Angelina Jolie, Demi Moore and Pamela Anderson all also netted nominations in the highest classes for their comeback roles in Maria, The Substance and The Last Showgirls, respectively.
On the television front, the People’s Princess Ayo Edebiri has received another nomination for her part in The Bear. Cooper Koch has also landed the Best Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or Television Motion Picture nom for his rendition of Erik Menedez in Ryan Murphy’s Monsters. Adam Brody’s Hot Rabbi from Netflix’s Nobody Wants This is award-nominated now, too.
The Golden Globes has always provided a roadmap to the Oscars, with the nominations and eventual wins often foreshadowing the outcoming of the Academy Awards. While the latter event won’t be slated until March, it’s worth acquainting yourself with the names and faces currently defining cinema. Ahead, every nomination for the 2025 Golden Globes.
