Sara Rashid is a wallflower. She remains watching, and in doing so, she is learning. This has culminated in her mastering the art of finding the perfect balance between running a business and staying creative while doing so. “I don’t attempt creative things all the time. When I do, that’s where I can do the most. But in my day-to-day, I ask myself as I do my team, ‘How can we solve this creatively?’”
At the height of the pandemic, when all hope and possibility seemed lost, Sara burst into the collective consciousness of Kuala Lumpur with the introduction of her business venture, Phil’s Pizza. A love letter to her partner, Phillip, and her ardour for the New York-style pizza catapulted her into the food and beverage industry.
It was not necessarily the slew of pizza toppings that blossomed a cult following for the brand. Rather, with the assistance of her creative team, she ventured out and explored the possibilities of what a pizza restaurant could bring to the voracious consumers in the city. From a surf day event in Cherating to yearly Valentine’s Day celebrations at REXKL, Phil’s Pizza ended up opening doors in more than one way for this witty businesswoman.
Sara has since carved out an intricate path behind her while continuing to do so much more for her future. With the addition of Restaurant Dominic, a classic French restaurant, Murray’s Smoothies under her belt, and the expansion of Phil’s Pizza nationwide, Sara is eager to peer through the veil and materialise all of her goals.
“When people see someone’s success online, they immediately think that said person’s life is a bed of roses. There are thorns in there too, you know,” she explicates. In conversation on success, the restaurateur highlights hardships as an integral cog to her winding road to success.
While not necessarily sharing her life online—she remains private across her social accounts—Sara Rashid hammers in an important takeaway, one she had to learn the hard way. “Everyone experiences a personal blanket of turmoil while on the road to success. You can plan every detail down to the finest, and things still don’t work out how you want them to.” The advice for overcoming this is resounding. “Keep trying anyway.”
