GRAZIA Creative Class: Cyii Cheng on Conquering Both Sides of Fashion

Managing and designing pieces for Ghostboy, starring in high fashion shoots as a model, and an internet persona: Cyii Cheng is the ultimate cool girl.

Chalking up Cyii Cheng up to just being a “cool” girl would be reductive. Yet, time and time again, she finds herself before a three-pronged forked road. On occasion, she has been categorised as a high-fashion model who does runway shows and editorials. Then there are times when people put her into the tight-fitted box of being an internet personality and influencer. By proxy of this, she is known by many, as Gillian Flynn coined so famously in her Gone Girl monologue—“A cool girl.”

Due to her rich online persona, some have constricted the young maven down to her physicality. There is, of course, the fact of her co-ownership and co-creatorship of her label Ghostboy where she serves as designer and business manager. This, in turn, has created a much elusive character. Unfortunately for the naysayers, it is not the case.

When speaking about Cyii Cheng, a quiet persona who prefers observing and listening as opposed to partaking in grandiose conversations, one forgets to realise the depth in her character as a person. She resounds an opinion that she once shared in a passing conversation: “People only tend to see me in these three areas, and for the longest time, I just sort of rolled along with it.”

But tables turn, and she is now urged to speak. When supplicating Cheng to describe herself, she does so succinctly. “I would say I’m someone with a lot of gratitude. I’d also say I’m quite lucky, and for that, I am grateful.” 27 this year, Cheng has made a name for herself, one done through years of hard work and perseverance.

From her early days of modelling school to taking on a finance degree and eventually starting a label with her close friend, Cheng affirms herself to being an artist at heart. Next to painting large canvases in her free time, Cheng was also a practicing tattoo artist amidst the pandemic. This is just a small glimpse into her colourful world. To learn more about Cheng, all one has to do is to mimic her in observing and listening.
