A fun little tidbit about fashion photographer Amani Azlin is that she is, as of the year 2025, a proud cat mom to 30 feline pets, an effort she manages with her mother. But segmenting her into being just a cat owner and a fashion photographer would be underselling her. Amani Azlin also happens to be an artist.
Having just wrapped up a show at HARTA Space, a gallery based in Ampang, the photographer, who is quiet and unassuming, for she prefers to steer away from the siren calls of the industry, has been marking herself as a significant player in the industry at large.
Her career in the industry began when she developed her interest in the craft, photographing friends and family in their natural elements. It was here that Amani decided to pursue this craft as a possible full-time profession. And that, she most certainly did. Upon graduating with a BA in Graphic Media Design from the University of Arts London, the photographer has time and time again marked a new milestone for her career in the fashion space.
From accruing magazine covers to photographing fashion spreads and leading fashion campaigns, Amani is genuinely knocking it out of the park. And just when you think she’s just about figured herself out and is good at what she does, she affirms a new career prospect into the consciousness, by becoming an artist.
When asked to describe why she does what she does, she shares, “On a personal level, I would say a big chunk of my work is documentation. Photography records and preserves ideas and styles of the current period to be kept as timely cultural evidence, whether or not that be in a bigger scaled fashion industry or a more individualised connection.”
Photographs, to Amani, hold a space of importance for they not only document the zeitgeist in which she occupies but are also a matter of narration, be it of successes or failures. The tangible nature of photographs—the printing of them, which she yearns for always—is a measure of growth.
