TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew will be keeping Anna Wintour company at the Met Gala 2024—not as a guest, but as an honorary chair of the event.
Chew joins a star-studded roster of hosts: Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth have all been named as official co-chairs, while Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson will serve as honorary chair alongside Chew.
As it does every year, the Met Gala is set to take place on the first Monday of May, 6 May 2024. Held at the The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the glamorous event gathers influential figures like Hollywood stars and elites from industries like fashion, film, technology, sports, business and more—all to raise funds for The Met’s Costume Institute.
The Met Gala 2024 will be held in tandem with the opening of the Costume Institute’s exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion. Along with the hosts, the gala’s dress code has been announced as “The Garden of Time”. According to The Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton, the dress code and the exhibition are “an ode to nature and the emotional poetics of fashion”.
Which begs the question: What will Chew wear to the Met Gala?
The Singaporean businessman might look to Loewe. The Spanish luxury fashion brand is expected to dress several guests at the gala, given Anderson’s role for the evening. It doesn’t hurt that Loewe has a history of making killer suits: see the sharp tuxedoes designed for British actor Josh O’Connor’s red carpet appearances, or that daring pink suit worn by ASAP Rocky to the 2019 Grammys.
If Chew opts for a custom Loewe look, it might riff off elements from the fashion brand’s Spring/Summer 2024 collections for men and women. Think ultra-high-waisted pants, classic menswear checks and giant pins. That last detail has proven to be very worthy of the red carpet, as demonstrated by actress Aubrey Plaza and Past Livesdirector Celine Song at recent awards shows.
Chew is not above making a fashion statement. When the TikTok chief executive attended the Met Gala in 2022, he was just as dressed up as his wife, Vivian Kao. Chew looked dapper in a three-piece suit, which included a striking tail coat. He also added a flourish to his tailored ensemble through his accessories: a white bow and a pair of black velvet loafers.
Will Chew step up his suit game this year? We’ll have to wait and see. For now, he can find some style inspiration below.
