After performing nearly 150 shows to an average audience of 50,000 for over a year, Taylor Swift has proved that she’s been “working late cause she’s a singer” while on the billion-dollar grossing Eras Tour. But on the second night of her stint in New Orleans, the songstress delivered the ultimate unexpected act during the ‘surprise song’ segment, proving that she’ll stop at nothing to treat her fans.
Indeed, Swift might be keeping busy, but she managed to find time to reunite on stage with Sabrina Carpenter and sing an acoustic rendition of “Espresso”. For the uninitiated, Swift performs a mashup of songs from her body of work that don’t feature on the setlist. However, rather than reaching into her own archives, Swift instead told the crowd she would “sing a song that’s not mine, but it’s somebody that I really love”.
“It’s been stuck in my head, and it would just make me feel good if I knew 65,000 other people had the song stuck in their head, just like I do,” she said. She then jumped into the verse, before abruptly stopping and pulling out her phone to invite Carpenter to join her. “I know she’d really love to know how loudly you just sang it, so is it ok if I just call her?” Swift said.
Holding her phone into the microphone, Swift joked that she was “somewhere very loud” and asked if the Short N’ Sweet singer had a chance to “come down to the stadium real quick”. Carpenter then emerged in a white babydoll dress to carry out a mashup of “Espresso”, “Please, Please, Please” and “Is It Over Now?”
This isn’t the first time the pair had sung a duet, as those who watched the first night of the Eras Tour in Sydney, Australia will recall. Carpenter, who opened for Swift earlier this year, unfortunately, wasn’t able to perform due to dangerous weather conditions, leaving The Tortured Poets Department singer to bring her out to perform a medley of “White Horse” and “Coney Island”.
One day you’re singing covers of Taylor Swift on the internet, and then she’s singing your chart-topping single during the biggest event of her career. Go figure.
