At the 2024 Golden Globes, a seemingly innocuous moment became frenzied material for TikTok’s lip readers. What could’ve been shrugged off as some friends catching up in a commercial break has become the internet’s first viral gossip of the new year, and if this is anything to go by, we’re in for one hell of a 2024.
As it was posited, hushed whispers between Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift were “deciphered” to tell a salacious story.
In the footage captured, it appeared as if Gomez, who was nominated for ‘Best Actress’ in a television series for her performance in Only Murders In The Building, was filling Swift, who was up for a “Cinematic and Box Office Achievement” award for her Eras Tour concert film, and her plus one, Miles Teller’s wife Keleigh Sperry, in on a drama-laden interaction that just occurred. Though no audio was recorded with the clip, Swift and Sperry’s reactions said it all: tea was spilt.

Netizens were quick to assume what was being discussed. The leading theory was that Kylie Jenner forbade Gomez from taking a selfie with Timothée Chalamet. (Gomez and Chalamet worked together on the 2019 film A Rainy Day in New York).
Sperry appeared to say “Timothée?!” in response to what Gomez whispered in Swift’s ear, with the former Disney star nodding emphatically. It was arguably the biggest pop culture moment from the evening—and one that mightn’t have happened without some stealth camerawork.
But did Gomez and Swift talk about Chalamet and Jenner? Lip readers say yes, but sources close to Gomez say no.
In a new report from People, an insider vehemently denied that Gomez ever discussed her former co-star and his new beau. “She was absolutely not referencing anything about Timothée or Kylie,” the source said, debunking rampant speculation.
The source added that the multi-hyphenate, who recently made her relationship with music producer Benny Blanco public, “never even saw or spoke to them”.
Now, the Wonka actor has also addressed the fan theory while out in Beverly Hills last night. Asked point-blank by a TMZ photographer about whether his girlfriend, Jenner, selfie-blocked Gomez, Chalamet finally relented to questions about the rumours to clear the air.
Asked if he and Gomez were “cool,” he replied, “Yeah, of course.” Then, when asked if Jenner and Gomez had any “beef” to squash, he also said “no,” adding that everything was sweet between parties.
“We’re all good,” he said.
So, what was discussed then? Sadly, that information is only privy to those in earshot.
