The ornate monolithic columns at Cipriani Wall Street are hemming in New York’s most influential crowd this evening at the 33rd annual Gotham Awards. Renowned for celebrating achievement in independent filmmaking, tonight will see Bradley Cooper honoured with the Cultural Icon and Creator Tribute for Maestro, Ben Affleck will be awarded the Visionary Icon and Creator Tribute for Air, and Greta Gerwig will be feted with the Global Icon and Creator Tribute accolade for Barbie.
Along with some wonderful new directors nominated, another notable mention is May December—the critically acclaimed film which premiered in Cannes in May and stars Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman—which is nominated for Best Screenplay. Another is Past Lives. Starring Greta Lee, it follows a woman reunited with her childhood best friend from Korea, and is nominated for Outstanding Lead Performance. Lee will go head to head with Michelle Williams for Showing Up and Cailee Spaeny for Priscilla. You can see the full list of nominees here.
As we wait with bated breath for the announcement of the winners, here are the red carpet’s special mentions, led by a newly blonde Penelope Cruz. The 49-year-old actress is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Performance in Ferrari. Also nominated in this category is Ryan Gosling in Barbie (of which chats this week suggest there might be a sequel) and Rachel McAdams in Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.
