There’s nothing that piques our curiosity quite like celebrity couples. They’re living proof that relationships require hard work, with even the most famous A-listers requiring space and time to reassess priorities and what they want from a significant other.
This has never been more true in 2023—or the year of the great summer of breakups. With Venus in retrograde, Breakup Season™ has claimed many of our favourite pairings, with the likes of Sophie Turner, Bella Hadid, Rosalía, Kendall Jenner and even Meryl Streep announcing their newfound singledom in the course of 12 months.
Yet, the hopeless romantics here at GRAZIA are firm believers that there is love after heartbreak. Cementing that notion is a slew of Hollywood bigwigs who have reconciled after previously splitting. Ahead—and perhaps in an attempt to manifest a kinder 2024—all the celebrity couples who have broken up and got back together.
Celebrity Couples Who Have Broken Up And Got Back Together
Hailey Bieber & Justin Bieber
Hailey and Justin Bieber celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary in 2023. The pair tied the knot in a South Carolina wedding in September 2019, but it wasn’t all smooth sailing in the lead-up to their nuptials—despite getting married in a water-front ceremony. You see, the Biebers had only reunited for one month before the singer proposed to the then-model. The pair dated—albeit not exclusively—from 2015 to 2016 when the pair split in a self-described “dramatic” fashion. “‘Fizzled’ would not be the right word — it was more like a very dramatic excommunication,” the Rhode Beauty founder explained at the time. “There was a period where if I walked into a room, he would walk out.”
Miley Cyrus & Liam Hemsworth
After meeting as co-stars on The Last Song, Hemsworth and Cyrus broke up twice before reuniting and becoming re-engaged in January 2016 (they were first engaged in 2012). After losing their house in the 2018 Woolsey Fire, Cyrus and Hemsworth married before divorcing in 2019. Since then, Cyrus has penned numerous ballads about their time together, including the self-love anthem “Flowers” and “Used To Be Young”. Cyrus addressed her and Hemsworth’s bond following their second reunion, revealing, “I think what people should understand is I think young people in general – what we wear and what a relationship and commitment means – is very different to what tabloids like to make it mean.”
Gigi Hadid & Zayn Malik
Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik dated off-an-on for five years from 2015 to 2021. The pair officially ceased seeing one another after the One Direction alum was reportedly involved in an altercation with the supermodel’s mother, Yolanda Hadid. The pair first met at a Victoria’s Secret after-party in 2015 before splitting up in March 2018. By January 2020, the pair had officially reconciled and were expecting their first child together. Hadid and Malik welcomed their daughter, Khai, into the world in September that year. Both now co-parent the toddler.
Chrissy Teigen & John Legend
Did you know the pair fondly referred to as #RelationshipGoals actually broke up for a day once upon a time? “It was Miami many, many years ago and he was in a bad place,” explained Teigen. “They’re actually songs he sang that day that now when I listen to them, they really affect me emotionally.”
Prince William & Kate Middleton
Surely you remember the headlines when Prince William split from Kate Middleton. The pair were in college and by the sounds of it, it was the Prince who called it quits. “I, at the time, wasn’t very happy about [the break-up], but actually, it made me a stronger person,” says Middleton. “You find out things about yourself that maybe you hadn’t realised or I think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you’re younger. I really valued that time for me as well although I didn’t think it at the time!” The couple married in a lavish Royal wedding ceremony in 2011 and now are parents to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
Justin Timberlake & Jessica Biel
“Every once in a while, I catch a glimpse of her when she doesn’t see me looking and I have this moment where I’m like ‘If you only make bad decisions for the rest of your life, you made one really good decision there,” Timberlake said. But it wasn’t always smooth sailing. The couple called it quits in March 2011 but then got back together – and engaged – in August of the same year. A good decision, indeed.
Kylie Jenner & Tyga
Before she dated Timothée Chalamet and had two children with Travis Scott, Kylie Jenner dated rapper Tyga on-and-off for two years. It’s reported a seven-year age gap, high levels of scrutiny and rumours of infidelity led to their eventual split.
Adam Levine & Behati Prinsloo
It took dating someone else for the Maroon 5 singer to realise Victoria’s Secret model Behati Prinsloo was his forever. Levine was dating fellow VS model Nina Agdal following the split from his future wife. He then cut that relationship off and promptly proposed to Prinsloo. The couple wed in 2014 and have a daughter together. However, it seems that their one breakup was enough for the pair, with Prinsloo staying with Levine even after the “wife guy” scandal when he was found to have been cheating on the model with a 23-year-old influencer.
Jennifer Lopez & Ben Affleck
Proving that after heartbreak comes love is none other than Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck. After dating and becoming engaged in the early 2000s, the pair waited nearly two decades to reconnect and eventually commit to spending the rest of their lives with one another.
Orlando Bloom & Katy Perry
After a year of dating, Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry took “respectful, loving space” apart in 2017. By 2018, the pair had reconnected and have been together ever since. Bloom proposed to Perry the day after Valentine’s Day in 2019, but have still not wed. Their daughter, Daisy Dove, was born in August 2020.
Kit Harrington & Rose Leslie
Game Of Thrones stars Kit Harrington and Rose Leslie met on-set while filming season two of the fantasy epic in 2011. In 2013, and after a year of dating, the pair ended their romance. The pair reconciled in early 2014 and have kept a relatively low profile ever since.
