Though Mean Girls’ Cady Heron outlined the girl’s world rules for Halloween, it’s a very different story when it comes to Hollywood. Yes, the holiday is no longer a single fright night, but a week of chilling costumes, elaborate dress-ups and multi-personnel photoshoots to immortalise their efforts in our social media feeds.

This is, in part, due to the theatrical efforts of A-listers like Kendall Jenner and Heidi Klum and their annual star-studded scary soirées. But also the devotion of style savants who dedicate as much attention to their nightmarish outfits as they do their Met Gala ensembles. This year, we’ve already begun to see the stars take to the spooky season with aplomb and go the extra mile to create bespoke pieces or custom backdrops to really make their character shine.

While Halloweekend isn’t over yet, it’s clear that rather than leaning into frightening archetypes like witches or vampires, the stars are taking inspiration from pop culture. Indeed, it appears that movies are the ultimate form of inspiration this year, with Kylie Jenner donning her best silver swimsuit to go as the queen of the galaxy, Barbarella, Chicken Shop Date host Amelia Dimoldenberg dressing as Monsters Inc.’s slimy, paperwork-demanding secretary Roz, and Paris Hilton replicating Uma Thurman’s Mia Wallace from Pulp Fiction.

Elsewhere Janelle Monáe dressed as both Elliot and E.T. from Stephen Spielberg’s beloved 1983 family sci-fi, while Sophie Turner went down the rabbit hole as Trinity from The Matrix. Speaking of, Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco celebrated their first Halloween together with their couples costume, Alice and the Mad Hatter from Alice In Wonderland. Curiouser and curiouser.
