Not since Eleanor Calder wore an Acne Studios leather jacket for a walk with Louis Tomlinson in 2012 has the zeitgeist been so captivated by the wears of those dating someone in a boy band. But with Anne Hathaway about to take her turn as a pop star’s girlfriend in the on-screen rendering of a Harry Styles fanfiction, the actress could soon find herself a prototype for a new niche trend: the boy band beau aesthetic.
Indeed, should TikTok need a new poster child to emulate, why not look to the silhouettes preferred by a fictional 40-something sexy divorcée who finds herself courting one of the biggest musical acts in the world? This exact scenario will soon play out in the upcoming romance The Idea Of You, with the film following Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine’s nascent relationship from the early stages of meeting at a musical festival to the globe-trotting, private jet-flying sensation their tryst turns into.
But before the campy dalliance makes its debut on streaming services, Hathaway has given us a glimpse of how to achieve her character’s “aesthetic” by sartorially referencing the events of the film.
Indeed, while attending the film’s global premiere at SXSW in Texas, Hathaway took cues from her fictional counterpart’s “Solène” meet-cute with Galitzine’s “Hayes Campbell” at Coachella. For the occasion, Hathaway sported a desert-ready mini dress from French label Patou. The chintzy piece consisted entirely of individually applied sequins and an oscillating pattern embroidered into the bodice of the dress with rhinestones.
This subtle rendition of the boho chic trend is more akin to Hathaway’s penchant for body-conscious dressing than the artistic and fluid silhouettes her dramatis personae sports in the film. Nonetheless, it’s further proof that an actor should stay in character during the press tour—at least in the sartorial department.
During the actual premiere, Hathaway appeared choked up as she expressed her gratitude to the audience through teary eyes. “You have no idea the gift that you’ve just given us with your responsiveness, by being so connected to every little nuance in this,” she said while crying before adding: “I will never forget this screening.”
Based on the content of the actual film, it appears audiences won’t either. In an early review released by Variety, the publication explains, “There’s steam enough to come, as [Hathaway and Galitzine] ravage hotel rooms in Barcelona, Rome and Paris”. Consider us sat!
