If her Academy Award-winning performance as Bella Baxter in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things didn’t cement Emma Stone as the ultimate screen chameleon, her next role might. Indeed, cinephiles are speculating that Stone’s turn in Lanthimos’ upcoming comedic sci-fi Bugonia will deliver her boldest beauty transformation yet.
It’s rumoured that the 35-year-old has shaved her hair for the project, with Stone’s most recent appearance at the New York Film Festival actually a covert operation to keep the buzz cut a secret until the release.
Over the weekend Stone attended the premiere of Jesse Eisenberg’s directorial debut, A Real Pain. The movie, which Stone helped produce, sees him star across from Succession star Keiran Culkin as cousins who embark on a Holocaust tour through Poland in an attempt to reconnect in the aftermath of their grandmother’s passing.
Having skipped out on Louis Vuitton’s Spring/Summer 2025 collection, which debuted at Paris Fashion Week in September, the star donned a draped floor-length dress presented in the range for the occasion. Made from a sheer, brown-and-white stripe fabric, the piece was sliced at the waist to expose a black bodysuit underneath the gathered material.
But it was this blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment that piqued our interest, and we have all kinds of questions after seeing what could be believed to be a lace front wig. Elsewhere at the premiere, Stone was filmed embracing Culkin’s wife Jazz Charton in a sweet hug before pausing to quickly adjust what appeared to be her hairline.
Sure, the innocuous moment could’ve just been Stone briefly taming any loose flyaways. However, further doubt as to whether the actress has traded in her signature red tresses for a clean shave arose when pictures of Stone wearing a scalp-tight beanie began circulating online. You can see the photos, or “proof” of her new hair transformation, here, and a close-up of her dark auburn locks from the event below.
Those involved have kept tight-lipped about the production, though several online film update social media accounts have confirmed that Stone is indubitably bald. Details around the film are limited, but it’s been said by The Hollywood Reporter that Stone will once again reunite with Jesse Plemons for a remake of the 2003 Korean-language film Save the Green Planet. Horror king Ari Aster is also involved with production and a release date has been set for November next year.
While we eagerly await an official corroboration on Stone’s new look, it’s worth acknowledging that she’s not the only celebrity to eschew their signature hairstyle for a shorter cut. As you may recall, Harry Styles offered the first glimpse of his widely-discussed buzz cut on social media while promoting a dinner hosted in honour of his beauty brand, Pleasing. Perhaps this style is becoming ‘the favourite’ in Hollywood?
