Never underestimate the astute power of colour. For its latest campaign for Bleu De Chanel, Chanel shows us the symbolism behind the colour blue. American-French actor Timothée Chalamet teams up with legendary American director Martin Scorsese, for a short film that follows a man on a quest to find himself, trying to find the line between his different identities as a celebrity and an everyday man.
Playing with scenes in black and white, the short film explores the dynamic tension between Chalamet’s character’s celebrity persona and his real, darker self, in an attempt to discover who he really is. Brighter moments of hope and optimism, as illustrated through flashes of blue, find themselves peppered throughout the film, depicting his character’s outlook towards his life and future. Chalamet’s character’s search for his inner truths culminates in an important message: “Find your blue, find yourself”.
Scorsese, having directed the first Bleu De Chanel campaign back in 2010, taps into the fragrance’s multi-faceted and unabashed qualities, to craft the short film starring the Dune actor. Though this is the creative duo’s first time working together on a project, the pair’s chemistry was palpable through special behind-the-scenes footage, as released by Chanel last October, ahead of the campaign launch.
The aromatic, woody fragrance is one of the hallmark fragrances for men from the house of Chanel, best loved for its strong notes of New Caledonian sandalwood and tonka bean. The warmth of the scent is further brought out by hints of cedar, while the signature blue bottle embodies an air of mystery, ideal for the modern man who simply cannot be defined by others. According to Olivier Polge, an in-house Perfumer-Creator at Chanel, the Bleu De Chanel is adopted by “a man who dismisses facades and who is not afraid to let vulnerability show through his tough, disarming exterior”.
