So you’re not quite sure whether or not to pull the trigger on Dyson’s latest hair tool. After all, it is a pretty significant investment—RM2,899, to be exact—so we understand your deliberation. We’ve had three months with the hair styler, so keep reading to see the verdict on our Dyson AirWrap i.d.™ review.
But first, a little introduction to my hair. It’s straight, leans on the thicker side, and is most definitely chemically damaged from a lot of experimenting. If you need a more specific description of my hair, it’s Type 1c to a tee, because to say that I struggle with frizz and chronic dryness is an understatement. I don’t fuss too much with my haircare routine, which means every two to three days I’ll shampoo and condition, and maybe mask once or twice a month, depending on how busy my schedule gets. If these all sound like you and your own tresses, then you’ve found just the Dyson AirWrap review for you.
Our Honest Opinion on the Dyson AirWrap i.d.™
As for the tool itself, it’s a definite upgrade from its predecessor. For starters, this one comes with an actual fast dryer attachment. If you have yet to own a Dyson Supersonic hair dryer, this attachment practically replaces that need. Not only does it cut out an entire tool from my routine, it dries my hair much faster (and quieter!) than my regular hair dryer. Going from towel-dried to 80 per cent dry takes less than 10 minutes for my chest-length, layered hair.
The ultimate selling point for the Dyson AirWrap i.d.™ is in the name itself. The Big Bang Theory’s Sheldon Cooper once said that everything is better with Bluetooth, and in this case, we have to agree. With this new connectivity through the MyDyson app, I can set up my hair profile so the tool can identify just what it needs for styling. Not only that, but it will also tell me when I need to clean my filter, which, so far, it hasn’t.
This intelligent styling system proves to be a total game changer, even if you already have the previous version of the device. Instead of having to manually select a heat setting and airflow speed, and hold up the cool shot button for north of 10 seconds at a time (yes, you read that right), all you have to do now is flick to activate the i.d. curl™ technology that’s already tailored to your hair needs.
For me, this feature alone cut my styling time by a lot because guess what? I don’t have to do all that hair arithmetics myself. From the six-question quiz, the app has deduced that I need 16 seconds of heat and five seconds of cool shot per strand, for a grand total of 31 seconds including the wrapping time. So even though it has a learning curve, the app pretty much answers a lot of the questions for you, even if you’re new to the styler. At the end of that 31-second wait, it goes into Ultra Low Flow Mode to release the curl, signalling that I’m ready for the next section.
Granted that that would amount to over half an hour per styling session, but I’ll take it in the name of hair health. My goal is not to only achieve that enviable, salon-worthy curls and tame frizz and flyaways; it’s to do both of those without incurring more damage to my hair. The intelligent heat control keeps the temperature at a cool 150°C so as to prevent any extreme heat damage. So how does it keep the curl? you ask? It relies on the motor to generate enough pressure to create the Coanda effect (the very one that suctions your hair to the barrel) and uses the air to create curls.
Just as its previous edition, the AirWrap i.d.™ doesn’t only curl; it also has other attachments so you can maximise the device for all your hair styling needs. To date, Dyson offers a total of 19 attachments that cater to our different preferences, hair types, and even length.
The set comes with six, two of which are for curling purposes. So on days when I want a quick and easy sleek style, I reach for the soft smoothing brush. Alternatively, there’s also a large round volumising brush to add an extra oomph. Last but not least, there’s the dryer+flyaway smoother. It may look unassuming, but once I started using it, there was no going back. Pesky stray hair that ruins the silhouette is a thing of the past. A quick pass with that attachment is just the cherry on top to result in a hairstyle that will lead anyone to believe that I just had a professional work on it.
If I were to add any to the already versatile offerings, I would opt for the 20mm barrel, only because tighter curls equal longer-lasting curls. But ultimately, that’s something a hair spray could easily pull off.
Final Verdict
Personally, I find there to be more pros than cons for the Dyson AirWrap i.d.™ styler. If you’ve already owned a previous version, I would say that this is a worthwhile upgrade. Even if you’re not one to curl your hair on the daily, the other styling options that are available pretty much justify the addition of this to your routine. From the ease of use and the user-friendly digital interface and connectivity, I can’t imagine how much more we could ask out of our hair styling devices—but I bet that Dyson will find a way anyway to offer imaginative innovations in the future.
