From her win as the National Cutting Horse Association’s Rookie of the Year to her unwavering commitment to fringe leather and suede, Bella Hadid has proved to be the ultimate cowgirl. So, who better to cast as the cool and aloof Sadie in the penultimate episode of Paramount’s Yellowstone?
Appearing in the neo-Western, one of the most-watched shows of the 21st Century, is certainly fulfilling the lifelong dream of many horse lovers around the globe. But how did Hadid go from modelling in New York to living in Texas and now making a cameo appearance in the fictional Montana ranch? As it turns out, we have showrunner Taylor Sheridan to thank for the casting choice.
The fifth and final season of Yellowstone provided a much-needed conclusion to the fate of the Dutton dynasty, the invented family that fronts the beloved franchise. Following the death of patriarch John, portrayed by Kevin Costner, series regular Beth, played by Kelly Reilly, travels to Texas in an attempt to settle the brood’s debts.
It’s there where viewers meet Hadid’s character, who first greets the no-nonsense Beth by mistaking her for a “very expensive” masseuse. (Which perhaps is a nod to the actress’ resemblance to Lisa Kudrow given that her iconic character, Phoebe Buffay, held this job throughout her run on Friends?)
Hadid’s Sadie is introduced as the girlfriend of horse trainer Travis Wheatley, who is portrayed by the series creator. The two travel together with Beth to an auction, where Sadie is asked what she sees in the man described as “the most arrogant man I’ve ever met—condescending, misogynistic, and 25 years older than you.” Hadid, probably taking inspiration from real-life interactions, quips back: “Have you ever seen him ride before?”
Later in the episode, Hadid is given her own scene to showcase her horseback riding skills. In a costume not too dissimilar to her recent street style, Hadid weaves through the Yellowstone Ranch in full rodeo regalia. Her boyfriend, real-life cowboy Adan Banuelos, also made an appearance, too.
This isn’t the first time Hadid has lent her talent to the screen, too. As you may recall, Hadid made her acting debut in 2022 when she appeared in the third season of Ramy Youssef’s self-titled comedy series, Ramy. Hadid joined the third season as the love interest of Ramy’s best friend, Steve, who is played by actor, comedian and disability advocate Steve Way.
Given both shows are critically acclaimed, award-winning successes, it’s clear that Hadid certainly knows her way around Hollywood. Now to see her as a guest on The White Lotus…
