The indie sleaze aesthetic and new music releases from The Dare and Addison Rae might have us romanticising the 2010s, but Kylie Jenner has taken our collective nostalgia one step further by taking us back to her ‘King Kylie’ era.
As those who were keeping up with the nascent Calabasas sensation at the time would know, a hallmark of her social media domination was her bright-coloured hair which was often died into cotton candy pinks, acid green or a black-to-blue ombré.
Now, ten years after her reign, Jenner has treated her 397 million Instagram followers to the ultimate throwback by unveiling a new dark turquoise shade. “Teal the end of time” is how she captioned the post debuting her bold beauty transformation.
The cosmetics founder and reality star hard launched the change by posing for selfies in one of her luxury vehicles. She opted to keep the remainder of her look minimal with fluttery eyelashes, a pouty overlined lip and a raw-edge white singlet top.
If this was 2014, Jenner would’ve most likely been on her way to pick up a bottled cold-pressed juice from Melrose with her Celine luggage tote (and bag charms) in hand. But given the decade that has passed, we wonder what King Kylie 2.0 has in store.
In 2022, Jenner immortalised this era in the cover shoot for CR Fashion Book. In a picture lensed by photographer Alana O’Herlihy, Jenner was surrounded by some of her most iconic hair looks, including the candy-coloured braids she wore to Coachella in 2016. “My favourite shot has to be the one where I am surrounded by my most memorable wig moments,” she said of the image.
At the time, Jenner controversially said that she “started” the trend of covering your natural hair, adding “I just do whatever I want to do, and people will follow.” Let’s see how this holds up in the 2020s!
