Arriving on the Lido de Venezia on a speed boat and with her entrepreneur fiancé on her arm, Lady Gaga returned to the Venice International Film Festival red carpet after eight years in a commanding custom Dior gown and sculptural vintage couture headpiece from milliner Philip Treacy. Embracing the twisted romantic themes of her new film Joker: Folie à Deux, the multi-hyphenate star delivered a glamorous gothic fantasy you can’t help but fawn over.
The gown itself, designed by creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri, features a plunging neckline and halter neck bustier made from sumptuous black velvet. The piece crescendoed into a gargantuan drop waist skirt that demanded attention—and a starry wearer of a certain calibre to pull it off.
The same can be said about her hat, which originally debuted in Treacy’s Fall 2001 couture collection. Not too dissimilar to Sophie Wilde’s Loewe veil from the premiere of Babygirl earlier in the week, Gaga’s titfer curves soft lace into an architectural statement.
Of course, we’d be remiss not to acknowledge the influence late English fashion editor Isabella Blow had over the look. Coined with discovering both Tracey and Alexander McQueen, it was the latter who once recommended the Irish designer to work with the then-burgeoning pop star, convincing him by saying: “You have got to work with Lady Gaga! She has got the same boobs as Isabella!”
As this look has proven, of course, their similarities extend far beyond McQueen’s joking tribute, with Gaga often emulating some of Blow’s more outlandish headpieces in her artistry. Here, in front of the Palazzo del Cinema, we couldn’t think of a better place for Gaga to deliver the theatrics.
She completed the silhouette with a classic red lip and Tiffany & Co jewellery, including the luxuriate’s platinum and 18-karat yellow gold necklace with diamonds and the Victoria bracelet in platinum and diamonds. Gaga stars across from Joaquin Phoenix, who leads the film as the titular comic book villain, in the jukebox musical sequel. Watch the trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux, below.
