In 1899, a young, soon-to-be parvenu, Guccio Gucci, travelled to London where he worked as a luggage porter for the ritzy Savoy Hotel. From his vantage, he bore witness to the revolving door of glamour that came through the Covent Garden lobby. Now, 135 years later and on the other side of the Thames, this parade of London glamour has taken a different form—the front row of Gucci’s Cruise 2025 runway show inside the Tate Modern.
The Cruise collection marked the first for Sabato De Sarno since taking up the mantle of creative director in early 2023. Since his appointment, De Sarno has eschewed the chintzy maximalism of his predecessor, opting for a dialogue of slick minimalism. But keeping with the Italian luxuriate’s rich heritage, De Sarno too evoked his own Gucci Garden. This time, planting a bed of English roses befitting his hushed designs. (As he inferred with his debut Spring/Summer 2024 collection titled ‘Ancora’, which translates to ‘still’ in English.)
Leading the charge was the mother-daughter supermodel duo Kate Moss and Lila Grace Moss Hack. This convergence of generations was emblematic of the storied nature of the House of Gucci as De Sarno distilled what came before him into a parade of serene romance. London ‘It’ girls including Dua Lipa, Alexa Chung, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Mia Regan also played a part in Gucci’s next chapter. Though it was the Maison’s unofficial Irish envoys, Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott, who demonstrated the power of an expat, as Guccio Gucci himself was, in bicep-gripping shirting. A special mention must be reserved for Demi Moore and her pampered pooch Pilaf—especially for the puppy’s photo-ready tongue that ever so sweetly sticks out without fail!
