Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar
Premieres 1st May on Netflix
Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the visionary behind Bajirao Mastani and Devdas, returns with another sweeping epic that is Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. Set against the backdrop of pre-independence India, this eight-episode series kicks into gear when Mallikajaan’s influence over an exclusive house of courtesans in the district of Heeramandi is threatened by Fareedan, the daughter of her late nemesis.

Tarot
Premieres 1st May in Cinemas
Teenagers find sinister-looking tarot cards. Teenagers disregard the cardinal rule of Tarot readings. Teenagers die. While its all-too-familiar premise may dissuade some from flocking to the theatres, Tarot is still worth betting on if only for its ingenuity in reading the elements of astrology through the lens of horror. The atmospheric visuals and sound design are equally noteworthy.

The Idea of You
Premieres 2nd May on Prime Video
Going back to her rom-com roots, Anne Hathaway stars in The Idea of You as a 40-year-old art purveyor and single mother Solène. The story unfolds when she crosses paths with a 24-year-old heartthrob singer Hayes Campbell at the Coachella Music Festival. Striking up a romance with a pop star, however, proves to be challenging as her life is now subjected to constant public scrutiny.

The Fall Guy
Premieres 2nd May in Cinemas
As it turns out, his job is not just beach. Ryan Gosling gets shot at and blown up in a film that highlights the unsung heroes of moviemaking: the stunt performers. In The Fall Guy, Gosling’s rough-hewn stuntman Colt Seavers is forced to come out of his retirement after the star of the movie goes missing. It isn’t long before he realises that he’s in over his head as he’s pushed into the world of crime.

Dark Matter
Premieres 8th May on Apple TV+
Up for a mind-bending, Inception-esque viewing experience? This nine-episode, sci-fi thriller is not to be missed. Starring Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly, Dark Matter follows physicist Jason Dessen who is kidnapped and sent to live an alternate version of his life. Struggling to put the pieces together, he is soon confronted with the realisation that the culprit behind the chaos is himself.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

There’s no monkey business when it comes to the Planet of the Apes franchise and the latest chapter in this series says as much. Set in a distant future, decades after Caesar’s reign, the apes and the humans are increasingly at odds with each other, especially with a new tyrannical ape leader at the helm. But one young ape looks to turn things around as he learns that everything is not what it seems.

Uncle Samsik
Premieres 15th May on Disney+ Hotstar
Song Kang-ho is booked and busy. In the latest drama series set in 1960s South Korea, the actor plays Pak Doochill, also known as Uncle Samsik, who is described as a shady fixer who will stop at nothing when it comes to serving his paymaster. Seeing potential in Kim San, he forges an alliance with the young idealist to turn the country into an industrial nation and reap the benefits.

Your favourite 19th-century Gossip Girl is headed back to the small screen, shifting its focus to Lady Whistledown herself, Penelope Featherington. Alas, her desire is thwarted by her lack of confidence—a problem that Colin soon offers to remedy, in the hope of winning back her friendship.

Narrating the origin story of Furiosa, the dynamite character from Mad Max: Fury Road, the blockbuster brings us back to when she was taken away from the Green Place of Many Mothers. Finding herself in the Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus, Furiosa must fight to find her way home.
